Why Is Compression Therapy Helpful?

Medical compression garments push dilated vein walls back into place where muscles can help “pump” the blood up through the lungs and heart. The increased blood supply flows throughout the body more efficiently; carrying with it increased nutrients and oxygen that reduces swelling, fatigue, pain and the possible formation of blood clots.

What Is Gradient Compression?

The greatest amount of limb swelling usually occurs in the ankles and lower arm as a result of the pull of gravity. Garments with graduated, or gradiant compression, work against the pull of gravity. This type of garment offers its greatest amount of compression at the points farthest from the heart; with the compression being gradually reduced by the time the top of the garment is reached. Gradient compression garments should be worn only during the day.

Why Are Medical Stocking Sold By Prescription?

Compression stockings should be worn only after consulting your physician. Compression stockings are not recommended for patients with severe arterial insufficiency.

The certified fitters at Peters Orthopedics team with your physician to provide you with the compression, style, and fit appropriate for your medical needs.

How Are Compression Hose Different From The ‘Support Hose' Found At The Drug Store?

‘Support hose’ are sold over the counter and offer only mild compression. Support hose do not offer ‘graduated’ compression. Support hose are comfortable and appropriate for some individuals, but they are virtually ineffective for treating the symptoms of vein disease.

Compression garments should also not be confused with the ‘white socks’ or TED® hose that are often provided to patients in the hospital. These garments are ‘anti-embolism’ hose designed to prevent blood clotting while the individual is in bed. TED® hose do not offer graduated compression to work against gravity.

Why Are Medical Stocking Expensive?

It is the fabrication process of compression garments that cause them to be more expensive than regular stockings. These garments should be recognized as a prescription medical device designed to slow the progression of serious circulatory concerns.

How Long Will The Hose Be Medically Effective?

Manufacturers state that with proper care and use of a garment worn daily, the original level of medical compression remains for approximately six months. Fingernails, jewelry, pets and Velcro are frequently responsible for the runs, snags and fabric-pilling that do not fall under manufacturer warranty.

If I Have A Prescription, Will Insurance Help Fund Compression Garments?
