Sports activities should be enjoyable, but an unplanned, unexpected injury or trauma can alter that enjoyment. Players of ice hockey, as well as contact sports, frequently have protective gear including helmets and facemasks. Basketball, soccer and baseball players who appear on the court or playing field without such protection, often encounter direct facial blows from either the ball or an elbow. Forceful contact to the nose, cheek and jaws frequently result in facial fractures.
After treatment, many athletes, including the ‘weekend warrior,' are eager to return to practice or competition before their fractures have completely healed. Depending on the level of activity, this could pose additional risks.
The custom mask, commonly worn after injury to the nose, cheeks or jaw, allows the individual to continue participation without the fear of additional trauma. The custom fabricated facemask may be the answer to concerns expressed by coaches, parents and athletes.
Custom facemasks, fabricated by Peters Orthopedics, are designed to take pressure off the fracture site, fit snugly, create minimal visual impairment, as well as be tolerated by the athlete. Unlike many off-the-shelf facemasks, custom masks are designed to mirror facial structure and accommodate individual needs based upon fracture locations and demands of specific sports.
Though most of athletes would prefer to go without a mask, many have reported wearing it has helped prevent significant injury when struck by a flying ball or jutting elbow.
After consultation with the physician and/or sports trainer, contact our office to discuss having a custom face mask become part of your necessary protective sports gear…
